Shenhuangshan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Hengyang Basin. The name of Shenhuangshan Formation was given by the Geological Institute of Hunan (1972). The section for designation is at Shenhuangshan of the Hengyang City. In 1961, the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology called it as the Jibingtan Fm. The present lexicon follows the name of Shenhuangshan Formation. The type locality is the Shenhuangshan section in Hengyang (112º35', 27º06').
Lithology and Thickness
The Shenhuangshan Formation is a group of brownish red conglomerate, feldspar quartz sandstone, calcareous muddy siltstone and multi-colored siltstone and calcareous mudstone. Its thickness is 1700~2000 m in maximum, and less than 500 m in minimum.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation unconformably overlies the Dongjing Fm.
Upper contact
The formation conformably underlies the Huitangqiao Fm (or Daijiaping Fm)
Regional extent
It widely distributed in the Hunan Province, well developed in the Mayang, Hengyang, Chayong and Xiangtan basins.

Fossils
This formation contains ostracods, charophytes, Estheria, bivalves and plant fossils. The ostracods are represented by the Cypridea (Pseudocypridina)-Eucypris- Cyprinotus Assemblage; charophytes by the Euaclistochara-Mesochara Assemblage; plants by Manica, Populophullum, Cycadespermun, Pagiophyllum, Brachyphyllum; and bivalves by Nakamuranaia and Sphaerium; Estheria by Tenaestheria, Dictyestheria and Halysestheria.

Depositional setting
The formation is of lacustrine and fluvial facies.
